Milbank recovering from operation on broken neck.

Byline: Lee Mottershead

FORMER Classic-winning trainer Charles Milbank, most famous for springing a 54-1 shock with the Willie Carson-ridden Policeman in the 1980 Prix du Jockey-Club, underwent surgery yesterday after suffering a broken neck last week, writes Lee Mottershead.

Milbank, who also saddled Santa Tina to win the 1970 Irish Oaks under Lester Piggott, was injured when falling down the stairs of a cross-Channel ferry.

In a desperate twist of fate, he was returning to his French home after visiting his daughter Camilla, who is undergoing rehabilitation at Stoke Mandeville Hospital after breaking her neck in a Newmarket gallops fall in July.

Her father, who relinquished his training licence in 1993, was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital following the overnight accident.

Milbank suffered a head injury and a fracture to his C5 vertebra, while there was also damage to the spinal cord and cartilage between his C4 and C5 vertebrae.

Wendy Milbank, former wife of Charles and mother of Camilla, said: "We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support from friends and family. Everyone has been so kind.

"We also appreciate the messages of support since Charles's accident, and obviously we all hope he makes a full recovery."
