Midway's: seasonal athletic injury report for head coaches & AD's. (Training).

AT THE END OF EVERY sport season at Midway High School, we have the head coach of each sport submit an end-of-the-season report to us.

Such reports are invaluable in keeping track of our progress and suggesting ways and means of improvement from season to season.

Over the years, we have also had our training staff send us a record of all the injuries sustained during the season.

While checking out the completed athletic injury forms one year, it occurred to us that a "Trainer's Report" would fit in perfectly with the administration of our athletic program.

I set up a meeting with my staff of trainers and asked them to prepare a seasonal report on the injuries sustained in each sport and the ways in which they could be prevented.

The report had to be specific in nature and include information that could be shared with the head coaches and athletic director at a meeting with the trainer.

The following is an example of a Volleyball Fall Sport Report by the Midway Athletic Trainer Dept.:

Ankle sprains:

Two significant sprains: average return to play was two to three weeks with continued strength training throughout the season. A predisposition to chronic ankle sprains occurred because of ligament laxity.

Slight sprains (numerous): two to three days return to activity with little discomfort; rehab time approximately one week.

Recommendations for prevention

* Incorporate ankle-strength exercise in off-season.

* Work on balance/proprioception.

* Heel cord stretching.

* Fitting for ankle braces/cloth wrap for all players.

Abdominal strains:

Approximate rehab time on strain: one to two weeks with continued core stabilization throughout the season.

Shoulder tendonitis:

Generally occurs at the start of the season with prolonged workouts.

Rehab time, one week to one month.

Recommendations for prevention

* During weight training, focus on RTC strengthening with specific theraband exercises.

* Upper body stretching.

Recommendations for prevention

Usually caused by tension, no rehab time needed.

Recommendations for prevention

* Instruction on proper relaxation and stretching techniques to prevent severe headache that limits practice.


Generally, one to two weeks time for rehabbing, focusing on lower extremity flexibility and core stabilization exercises.

Recommendations for prevention

* Focus on proper body mechanics during weightlifting.

* Use of weight belt during certain lifts.

* Specific low-back strength training.


Four to six weeks rest with crutches or boot; two weeks specific rehab after negative x-ray.


No significant knee injuries to rehab. Some tendonitis and a few bruises of the knee were reported.

Recommendations for prevention

* While weight lifting, do not attempt deep squats.

* While doing lunges, use the proper technique.

* Incorporate balance/proprioception in off-season workout.

The trainer's seasonal report offers a positive communication tool for athlete, coach, and trainer that will ensure the athlete of a healthier and more successful performance in his or her sport. Furthermore, the report will also provide the coach with an understanding of the importance of strength training in the prevention of common injuries that can hinder the athlete's ability to compete.
