Middle Eastern promise rods.

Bailey Peerless has won a series of orders in the Middle East and exports to the region were up 125 per cent last year. The firm is part of the Edgbaston Group.

Bailey Peerless, part of Edgbaston's Bailey Brothers subsidiary, is a specialist in drain-cleaning rods and test equipment.

Business in the Middle East is expected to amount to 25 per cent of export sales this year, the second most important export area after Europe for Bailey Brothers. Mr Palmer recently attended a major trade show in Dubai, where he picked up a tranche of orders.

One major contract has already involved producing 45,000 drain rods for a supplier in Kuwait. Other large orders have included drain test plugs and test equipment - used for measuring leaks in pipes - for the Ruwais petro-chemical refinery expansion project in Abu Dhabi. The company also has customers in Dubai, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Mr Palmer said: 'The Middle East markets will increase by a further 25-30 per cent this year, so it is a very important area for us, which continues to grow.'
