Intended by Reese (electrical and computer engineering, Mississippi State U.) as an introduction to microprocessors and microcontrollers for the student or hobbyist, this text first reviews digital logic concepts and introduces computer architecture fundamentals. It then offers coverage of assembly language programming in a C language context using the PIC18Fxx2 family. A chapter on advanced assembly language programming structured around computer arithmetic topics is followed by treatment of fundamental microcontroller interfacing topics such as parallel IO, asynchronous serial IO, synchronous serial IO, interrupt-driven IO, timers, analog-to-digital conversion, and digital-to-analog conversions. Three projects involving the above topics are then described. The text concludes with discussion of topics that go beyond PIC18Fxx2 family, such as a survey of other microprocessor families, the CAN bus, and memory technologies.
