Metrology centre of excellence is based in South Tyneside.

TYNESIDE Standards Limited (TSL) is nearing completion of a three-year expansion plan part-financed through a Grant for Business Investment Award which was delivered by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.

This enabled TSL to create a calibration facility and metrology centre staffed and equipped to service the needs of the North's leading companies.

Following the acquisition of their building on the Viking Industrial Park, South Tyneside, and the interior refurbishment designed specifically as a "one-stop" calibration facility, TSL now lead the way for privately-run laboratories in the North.

Boasting the largest UKAS scope of accreditation, TSL produce more UKAS calibrations than any of the region's other independently run calibration providers.

TSL was formed in 1995 by Tyneside TEC to create a number of jobs and stem the flow of work being sent from our region to other parts of the country. Directors Harry Thompson and John Wood, employed by TSL, participated in a MBO in 1998 and have seen the company grow each year, the employees increasing from two to 12, with more recruitment planned for this year.

Harry said: "Our objective since day one was to create a first-class laboratory without compromise.

"We therefore were very particular in our selection of staff and the equipment we purchased was and is always of the highest calibre with state-of-the-art software systems constantly being updated. Our SIP measuring machines are recognised as being one of the world's foremost calibration machines.

"We supplement these with several Carl Zeiss Jena Metroscopes, one of which is a three-metre model with an accuracy of one micron over its three metres. Our staff and equipment obviously contribute to TSL securing contracts in the aerospace industry locally and in other areas, while our software programs and IT systems allow us to manage and schedule the calibration of several blue-chip companies.

"Our electrical section, which incorporates the former Riversdale Services which we purchased two years ago, houses a vast array of calibration equipment which covers the full range of 17th edition test kit. The laboratory also has the capability to calibrate high-voltage test equipment.

"TSL service the requirements of many manufacturers in various fields, thus we hold UKAS accreditation in mechanical dimensional, electrical, torque, mass, pressure and temperature.

"One particular area beneficial to our customers is our on-site accreditations, ie surface plate calibration, optical projector calibration, pressure and temperature.

"TSL is the only laboratory in the North East with UKAS accreditation for these on-site calibrations. We obviously do not charge travel or subsistence, unlike laboratories coming into the area, therefore we can save companies hundreds of pounds.

"Other areas of Metrology TSL specialise in is screw thread measurement, often being called upon to arbitrate in customer/ manufacturer disputes or thread identifications. We offer subcontract inspection, re-engineering of components, forensic investigations etc. We also survey pipelines.

"TSL tailors its services to suit the requirements of its customers. And as always, calibration without compromise!"
