The 12 papers in this text evolved from an August 2002 workshop on historical pragmatics held in Glasgow; the 2002 conference of the European Society for the Study of English, held in Strasbourg; and the annual Modern Languages Association Convention held in San Diego in December 2003. The 12 contributors provide a range of studies on the history of the English language from the perspective of historical pragmatics, representing the critical convergence of different traditions of reading texts and analyzing discourse, and exposing key questions about the methods and outcomes of such readings or analyses. Topics addressed include the problems of identifying speech acts in earlier discourse, interrogation in courtroom discourse, transactional activities in service encounters, the structure and function of narrative discourse, and the history of meanings and expressions. For scholars in English historical linguistics, literary history, philology, and discourse analysis.
