Metal thefts escalating; YourSay.

THE initiative by West Midlands Police in Walsall to combat metal thefts (Mail, Crime Files, February 17) will, I hope, be supported, by the increased awareness of the public to such crimes. It must be hoped that the operation will be extended across the whole of the West Midlands area.

All unoccupied premises are very vulnerable but the theft of lead from our precious and ancient parish churches is particularly insidious and perplexing. In most cases the chancy vandalism involved in purloining active copper cable can also present an unacceptable risk to the general public.

A world shortage of non-ferrous metals has led to high prices and the resulting escalation of thefts.
