Metal legend makes it onto Cavern wall; Huge crowds welcome rock star to Cavern.

Byline: KATE FORRESTER

A BRAZILIAN version of Beatlemania descended on Liverpool's Mathew Street as a heavy metal legend was given his own brick in the Cavern Club's wall of fame.

Huge crowds of South American music fans surrounded Andreas Kisser, lead guitarist for Brazilian band Sepultura, as he was added to the list of musical heroes who have appeared at the legendary venue ahead of his performance at this weekend's Mathew Street Festival.

Andreas has showcased his talents at the Cavern before but it was only this year that club owner Bill Heckle realised how well known he and his band are among metal fans - and decided it was time to honour him in the traditional way.

Mr Heckle said: "Andreas has played here before, including at last year's festival with the Clube Big Beatles tribute band.

"But I just did not realise who he was and how big a name he is until I found out he was bringing two Brazilian TV documentary crews with him to this year's festival.

"I mentioned it to some other people and they were gobsmacked I had never heard of Sepultura, but that area of music has never been something I have followed properly.

"We thought we had better give Andreas his own brick because he is actually so famous. He is like a God among metal fans but he is a very nice, unassuming guy."

The brick was officially installed yesterday in front of crowds of fans who asked Andreas to pose for pictures.

The musician, who also celebrated his 44th birthday yesterday, dedicated the accolade to his wife Patricia.

He said: "It is beyond a dream for me to be here. There is not a bigger possible honour than being here and jamming at the Cavern Club, the most historic place in Liverpool." After the brick was presented, the throng of fans sang happy birthday to their idol in English and Brazilian.

Andreas will perform with the Clube Big Beatles on the Williamson Square Stage at 2pm on Monday.
