Message from the president.

The fall season is always the busiest time for CANNT with our largest event, the annual symposium, and fall board meetings. The CANNT 2007 conference was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, October 25-28, 2007. The theme was Diversity is the Key: People, Ideas, Information. This conference explored the issues of cultural awareness and sensitivity. The theme was integrated throughout the conference including the evening of entertainment, which was "A Manitoba Social." At the annual general meeting, the CANNT award recipients were announced and your new board of directors. Congratulations to the award recipients Sherri Kensall, Chantal Saumure, Colleen Wile, Lucia Constantini and Heather Beanlands. I want to welcome Jan Baker, Susan Placko and Colleen Wile as new members to the CANNT board of directors, and Lisette Lafreniere who remains on the board for another term. We look forward to the 2008 conference to be held in Quebec City, where we will also be celebrating 40 years of CANNT.

Obtaining certification is a way to be recognized for your specialized knowledge in nephrology nursing. This year, more than 180 nurses passed their nephrology certification exam or renewed their certification. This now brings the total of nurses in Canada with their certification to more than 1,000. Congratulations!

Another accomplishment this fall was the first annual Nephrology Health Care Professionals' Day. This was held on September 19, 2007, in collaboration with the Association of Nephrology Dietitians, the Canadian Association of Nephrology Social Workers and the Renal Pharmacists Network. The theme this year was Celebrating Working Together. The purpose of this day is to recognize all the tremendous efforts by renal teams in caring for individuals. We received emails from members sharing with us how their unit celebrated the day. We have posted these examples on the CANNT website. I hope on September 19, 2007, you took some time to recognize your colleagues and celebrated working together for patient care.

My term as CANNT president is nearing completion. It has been a very exciting and rewarding experience with many opportunities. I look forward to my role as pastpresident, as Alison Thomas takes on the role as the next CANNT president.

As the holiday season approaches, I want to wish you all a safe and wonderful holiday.
