Message from the Interim Director.

Even though summer is upon us, our curators have been diligently working at keeping our galleries fresh. We are pleased to launch a new initiative, Art Of Our Time, demonstrating our renewed commitment to modern and contemporary art. With this in mind, we present the exhibition Yinka Shonibare, MBE: Mother and Father Worked Hard So I Can Play featuring a series of brightly colored sculptures of children at play scattered among the permanent collection. Two new permanent collection galleries will open in the Searing Wing with 20th Century Abstract Art from the Ringling Collection highlighting works by Franz Kline, Louise Nevelson, Arthur Dove and Yves Tanguy among others all from the vaults of the Museum of Art.

This summer the Ringling Estate also gives circus Center Ring. With circus performances in the Historic Asolo Theater and circus family activities on Saturdays and at Art after 5, there is all the more reason to make The Ringling Museum one of your mainstays for summer activities.

And of course, quickly on the heels of summer we kick off the second Ringling International Arts Festival October 13-17. Once again we are partnering with the Baryshnikov Arts Center to produce this must-attend festival. Featuring 11 mainstage productions, artists from as far away as Moscow, Slovakia and Great Britain will be performing. New this year, in conjunction with the Ringling International Arts Festival, festival sARTee will take place from Englewood to Anna Maria Island--giving everyone from Sarasota and Manatee counties an opportunity to enjoy the arts.

Sincerely yours,

T. Marshall Rousseau Interim Director
