Merkel in Ghana.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is welcomed by Ghana's Vice President Bawumia at the Jubilee Airport in Accra yesterday. Merkel yesterday pledged German support to Ghana in implementing economic reforms and improving its infrastructure and energy generation, following a meeting with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo in Accra. Referring to a central theme in her three-country trip that began in Senegal, Merkel stressed the need to provide young people with a perspective, so that they did not undertake the hazardous journey to Europe. Legal avenues, such as visas for study and training, should rather be used, the chancellor said. Akufo-Addo said he was not proud of the illegal migration from Ghana to Europe, but emphasised that the Ghanaian authorities were co-operating with their German counterparts.
