Meridian To Provide Audit Services to Blue Cross of Idaho.

Business Editors/Health Writers

MILWAUKEE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 2001

Meridian Resource Company has signed an agreement with Blue Cross of Idaho Health Service, Inc. to provide DRG Validation Audit Services for the 300,000 plus members of the Idaho Blue Plan. Under the contract, Meridian will ensure that hospital bills reflect appropriate payment under the DRG method of reimbursement.

DRG is the acronym for "Diagnosis Related Group." Each patient's stay in a hospital is grouped into one of almost 500 diagnosis related groups depending upon the patient's medical condition and procedures. A hospital receives fixed reimbursement amounts representing the average cost of procedures for that particular DRG.

Meridian's DRG Validation process consists of an in-depth review comparing the patient's medical record to the insurance claim to ensure the billing (DRG) codes are correct.

Meridian found more than $2 million in savings on behalf of its clients, which include Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky and Indiana and Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin. Meridian also provides audit services to the State of Wisconsin Medicaid Program and for the Veterans Administration in the State of New York.
