Meridian Data CD ROM Networking Software Launches Windows/DOS and HTML Applications over Intranets; Industry-First Software Expands Line of CD Networking Solutions.

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 25, 1996--Meridian Data, Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS: MDCD) today announced CD IntraNet(TM) Software, industry's first software solution enabling users to launch traditional Windows/DOS and HTML CD ROM applications over Web-based intranets.

CD IntraNet Software runs on any Windows NT network server and allows multiple clients to simultaneously access CDs using standard Web browsers.

Meridian's new software product can manage a virtually unlimited number of CD ROM drives over intranets, which are private intra-organizational networks. It gives system administrators and Webmasters the necessary tools to configure CD resources, establish enterprise-wide NT share points and grant/deny user access.

With CD IntraNet Software, users for the first time can launch a complete range of CD applications -- without ever exiting their Web browsers -- and access hybrid CD ROMs, in which compact disc files are combined with information retrieved over the Internet, World Wide Web or dial-up services.

"CD IntraNet Software allows companies to easily integrate CD ROMs into their intranet without investing in additional hardware or incurring costly conversions to HTML," said Jeff Hill, product manager at Meridian Data. "By providing intranet access to Windows/DOS CDs -- the prevalent configuration of most of today's titles -- as well as HTML-formatted discs, CD IntraNet gives IT managers an ideal, cost-effective way to grow their CD collections, while protecting their substantial investment in commercial and in-house-created databases."

CD IntraNet Software Features

CD IntraNet Software includes Meridian's Slingshot!(TM) Web application launching technology and its advanced CD Net(R) for Windows NT CD networking software. The software works over any TCP/IP-based intranet and is compatible with network PCs running Microsoft Windows 95, Windows NT or Windows for Workgroups and popular Internet browsers, such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Explorer.

With CD IntraNet Software, network administrators and Webmasters can easily map specific CD titles for individual or workgroup access. For example, the system manager may restrict sales department users to demographic data, while allowing the finance department to access demographic and tax record information.

Additional CD IntraNet applications enable administrators to meter CDs to comply with licensing agreements. The software works with existing security controls and network firewalls to ensure that data cannot be accessed without authorization. This is particularly key for controlling access to in-house-created CDs which often contain proprietary information.

CD ROM Market

According to a recent Meridian Data survey, 74 percent of Fortune 1000 companies currently use CD ROM technology to deliver data over their internal networks, and 40 percent of IT professionals currently are delivering, or plan to deliver, CD ROM-based information via intranets.

CD ROM is one of the leading methods for the storage and distribution of commercial information. According to the research group InfoTech, commercial CD titles -- professional, corporate, library, educational and in-house publishing -- accounted for approximately 76 percent of the $18.1 billion worldwide CD title market last year. Typical organizations requiring access to vast amounts of CD-based reference material include corporations, government agencies, hospitals, universities and large professional services firms.

Pricing and Availability

CD IntraNet Software will be available in North America in November through Meridian's network of distributors and value-added resellers. CD IntraNet Software has an estimated average selling price of $1,400.

For customers who have already installed Meridian's CD Net for Windows NT product, a CD IntraNet Software Upgrade including Slingshot! Web application launching technology can be purchased directly from Meridian for $495.
