Merial, Duluth, Ga., will be marketing a new cattle DNA testing service under the IGENITY[TM] brand name. "Introduction of the IGENITY testing service marks our entry into the exciting new field of functional genomics," says Steve Rochester, head of Merial's Ruminant Animal Global Enterprise. "Our first test, IGENITY L, is now available for sale across North America and will become available globally in 2004." The IGENITY L test identifies cattle genotypes according to the type of a specific protein they produce. This protein, called leptin, regulates appetite and energy use. These functions have a fundamental influence on most key aspects of dairy and beef production.
