Mercantile profits rise.

Mercantile Stores Co. reported fourth-quarter profits surged 30.4 percent to $77.6 million, or $2.11 a share, and profits for the year rose 19.2 percent to $123.2 million, or $3.35. Sales from the 101 stores operated at the end of the 14-week quarter grew 5.2 percent to $977 million. Same-store sales equalized with the 13-week quarter a year earlier were up 2.4 percent.

Store sales for the 53-week year rose 2.6 percent to $2.89 billion from $2.82 billion. On an equalized 52-week basis, same-store sales gained 1.2 percent. (FNS)
