Mental health centre set up.

A CENTRE focusing on the development of mental health services in Wales has been set up.

The Centre of Mental Health Services Development (CMHSD)is hosted by the University of Wales Bangor's School of Psychology and will support the Welsh National Assembly's aim to develop and modernise mental health services.

Bob Woods, Professor of Clinical Psychology at Bangor, said: ``It is imperative that we build on the achievements of recent years. Following the establishment of the National Assembly for Wales and the development of specific health and social care strategies it is vital that Wales has the ability to conduct research to inform mental health policy and practice in a timely and effective manner.

``We have already established a steering group for the proposed Wales Centre for Mental Health (WCMH) to expand the work of CMHSD. The membership is made up of specialists representing voluntary and statutory agencies across Wales and they have indicated a strong degree of support for increasing the capacity of the existing arrangements.''
