Menges Roller.

Menges Roller, a full-service Wauconda, IL-based roller manufacturer, has announced availability of its Study on Crowned Rollers used in converting, nonwovens, paper, film and foil industries. "Many companies don't realize that they need a crown in their rollers to realize the maximum line speeds their equipment is capable of," said Matthew Menges, president. "We've seen applications that went on for years needing a crown and paid the costs of reduced productivity and shortened roller life."

Menges' Crowned Roller Report is the culmination of studies conducted by Menges Roller and its experience helping customers make informed choices. Issues addressed in the report range from reasons for crowned rollers, to specifying the amount of crowning. Included are drawings and diagrams further explaining issues like deflection, uniform loading and nip impression widths. Some of the key elements of the report are:

* Definitions of terms, beginning with crowning and roller deflection

* Explanations of the reasons for crowning rolls

* Detail on nip systems and reducing nip variation

* Advantages, including longer lasting roll coverings

* Avoiding poor crowning choices that could even cause more problems

* Choosing the amount of crowning and how it's calculated

* Using engineering equations and other methods to determine crown amount

* How computerized grinding delivers the best results

* Evaluating crowning and nip impression testing

* The role of deflection and resulting nip load in crowning
