Mendocino vacation rentals.

A house is not necessarily a home, but for a private vacation on the rugged Mendocino County coast, renting one can be the next best thing.

It sets the stage for a different kind of vacation. A kitchen will free you from dependence upon restaurants. Families or friends can get together for experiences impossible in most vacation accommodations: homemade pancakes in the morning, private late-night talks before a crackling fireplace.

Both individuals and area agencies rent houses, which range from modest cottages to luxurious spreads that sleep as many as 12. Describe what you want: Victorian or modern, isolated or in town, views of redwoods or pounding surf. Amenities may include hot tubs, decks, TVs and VCRs, barbecues, stereos, and telephones.

Ask about a cleaning fee (this can be as high as $50). Some houses don't allow children or pets. And be sure to ask what's meant by "an ocean view."

We list rentals between Elk and Fort Bragg; some are in Mendocino village. Unless otherwise noted, area code is 707. Individual owners. If you're willing to do some work, you can find houses not listed with agencies and save paying a middleman. The Fort Bragg Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce (964-3153) has a list of available houses, and a brochure. Some owners also advertise in local and Bay Area newspaper classifieds.
