Tom Dean, Professor of Computer Science and Cognitive and Linguistic Science at Brown University, has accepted an appointment as Deputy Provost, for a term beginning September 1, 2003 and concluding June 30, 2006. As Deputy Provost, he will help guide and manage the evolution of the academic programs at Brown. Dean became a Professor of Computer Science at Brown in 1993, and the following year was also appointed as Professor of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences. He served as Chair of Computer Science from 1997-2002, and in 2001-02 was also Acting Vice President for Computing and Information Services. Dean is a fellow of AAAI, a past member of the Executive Council, and served as the 1991 national conference program chair.
