commitment to an airport rail link in this yearas state budget.
Victorian Premier, Denis Napthine, yesterday announced the governmentas
commitment to build the electrified rail link from Southern Cross
Station to Melbourne Airport Melbourne Airport Acting CEO, Adam
Watson, said the announcement is a great solution for Melbourne and
will provide more options and further convenience for Victorians and
tourists travelling to and from the airport. aGetting our passengers,
visitors and staff to and from the airport precinct in a timely and
efficient way is becoming increasingly important as our airport grows.a
aThe construction of an airport rail link, along with the widening of
the Tullamarine Freeway to three lanes, are critical projects to support
the airportas growth into the futurea aAn airport rail link will not
only cement Victoriaas status as a premier international tourist
destination, but will also help ease congestion on our roads,a Mr Watson
said. Mr Watson said the rail link will play a vital role in setting
the tone for visitor experiences in and around Melbourne. aAs the
gateway to Victoria, , the proposed railway system from Melbourne
Airport will be an important part in connecting visitors to our great
city and state.a aTo ensure Melbourne and Victoria continue to be
considered as a premier tourist destination it is important for the
government to have visitor experience at the forefront of their mind
when planning for this new rail link,a Mr Watson said. In 2013
Melbourne Airport saw more than 30 million passengers pass through the
airport with the number expected to grow to 60 million by 2033.
