Meeting in the Middle: League of women voters of the United States 47th National Convention.

The LWVUS invites all members to join fellow Leaguers from 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong to celebrate 86 remarkable years of League achievements and chart the course for the next biennium of League programs. The Minnesota Leagues are excited and getting out the welcome mat to their beautiful city for this "Meeting in the Middle" of our 47th National Convention from June 10-13.

True to its name, derived from the Dakota Indian word mine ("water") and the Greek word polis ("city"), Minneapolis is a city of lakes--more than 22 in the Metro Area alone! Minneapolis and its inhabitants are widely known as cosmopolitan, cultured, friendly, accessible and genuine. The average temperature in June is perfect--76 degrees. And for those who love to shop, there is the Mall of America! Do plan to arrive early or stay a few extra days to explore the many attractions Minneapolis has to offer.

The Convention Preview, containing detailed information and convention and hotel registration forms, has been mailed to every League. All League members are invited to attend Convention, but Presidents of local and state Leagues and Inter-League Organizations will appoint their allotted delegates. Everyone can share the excitement as the Convention delegate body debates and adopts the 2006-08 National Program, the LWVUS Budget for the next fiscal year and amendments to the LWVUS Bylaws; and elects National Board officers, directors and nominating committee for the next biennium.

League members may use the Convention registration form on page 19 or register online for both Convention 2006 and the Convention hotel at www.lwv.org (go to the Members section to access the Convention site). The complete Convention Preview is also accessible online. If you need hard copy, please write to membership@lwv.org or call Betty Taira at 202-263-1345.

Early arrivals to Minneapolis may attend a Pre-Convention Training Workshop Friday, June 9, from 2:00-5:00 pm. Convention workshops on a variety of topics including the Democracy Agenda, Membership, Good Financial Practices, the Judicial System, International Programs, Advocacy and Internet Technology will be held on Monday afternoon, June 13.

Caucuses are meetings arranged, planned and conducted by delegates to discuss issues or share information. If your League would like to reserve a caucus room in advance and have your caucus listed in the Convention program, please contact Natalie Testa by April 14 at ntesta@lwv.org or 202-263-1314. Caucus rooms will be assigned on a space-available-basis; any caucus rooms remaining after advance reservations have been filled may be requested at Convention.

The local arrangements committee for Convention 2006 is sponsoring and invites you to attend a concert featuring singer, songwriter and storyteller Ann "Voice as Rich as Chocolate" Reed. This fundraising event is scheduled for Saturday, June 10, 7:00-8:00 pm; the ticket price is $25.00. Details on advance ticket purchase are in the Convention Preview online. Numerous Dine-Around choices are available for Sunday evening, June 11. In addition and at a modest cost, you may wish to take advantage of Arts, Mississippi River, Nature and Immigrant Community Tours. Delegates should come early and stay late. There's a lot happening at the LWVUS 2006 Meeting in the Middle Convention in Minneapolis!

Be prepared for some exceptional entertainment at the Convention banquet on Monday evening. Garrison Keillor, the creator and host for 30 years of the PBS radio show A Prairie Home Companion, is our featured speaker. The cost of the banquet is included in the Convention registration fee; additional banquet tickets may be purchased @$55.00 when you register in advance or at the Convention registration desk at the hotel.

The Convention site, the Hilton Minneapolis, is in the heart of the city, with skyways to many cultural attractions, music and theatre, as well as hundreds of fabulous shops and superb restaurants. All of these attractions are within walking distance. The hotel itself has a health club and indoor pool, sauna and whirlpool; it also provides modem hookup, irons, coffee makers and voice mail in every room.

See you all in Minneapolis in June!
