The author has tried to balance qualitative and mathematical perspectives in this text but expects that readers will have a couple years of university-level mathematics in an engineering or qualitative science field, and some exposure to geology. Initial topics include the hydrological cycle, vertical moisture profile, classification of aquifers, and preliminaries from fluid and soil mechanics. Subsequent chapters discuss field equations of flow through a porous medium discharge potentials for two-dimensional flows in horizontal, shallow aquifers, the Laplace equation, harmonic functions, and method of images, flow net, determination of aquifer characteristics, and the finite element method.
