McNEER TO RETIRE AS DIRECTOR OF WISCONSIN ENERGY

MILWAUKEE, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Charles S. McNeer will retire as a director of Wisconsin Energy Corp. (NYSE: WEC) on July 1, after 43 years of service with Wisconsin Energy and its subsidiaries.
McNeer retired in 1991 as chief executive officer of the company and continued to serve as a member of the board of directors of WEC and Wisconsin Electric Power Co.
"The company has gone through a period of transition in management in the last two years and I'm pleased to see the firm retaining its leadership position in the energy industry and the local business community," he said. "I have every confidence in management's ability to continue the success of the corporation."
McNeer joined Wisconsin Electric in 1950 and traveled through the ranks in engineering and administrative jobs. He was named president and CEO in 1975 and chairman in 1982. Four years later he guided the company through the formation of Wisconsin Energy, a parent holding company for utility and non-utility subsidiaries, retaining the title of chairman and CEO.
He led the company during the period of its greatest growth to date. At the same time, the company took the lead in developing strong conservation and load control programs while keeping rates among the lowest in the country.
During his tenure as chief executive, Wisconsin Energy and its subsidiaries established innovative plans to help stimulate the state's economy and received national recognition for its economic development programs and its early leadership in supporting acid rain legislation.
"Charlie McNeer has made vital contributions to our company, the state and the nation," said WEC's current chairman, Richard A. Abdoo. "His vision has been and will continue to be a major force in the community. We will miss his counsel on our boards of directors."
