McLAREN TO TEST CHRYSLER FORMULA ONE ENGINE

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) confirmed today it is in discussion with McLaren International's Grand Prix racing organization to develop a new version of the automaker's 3.5-liter V-12 Formula One engine for the 1994 Grand Prix season.
"The ultimate goal for Chrysler would be to win the Formula One World Championship," said Francois Castaing, vice president of Vehicle Engineering at Chrysler. "Therefore, we believe the best way to start working is with a test and development program that will allow us to see if our strengths and talents can be combined into a team that's capable of taking on and beating the world's best."
Over the past two seasons, senior Chrysler engineers and the technical resources of the company's new Chrysler Technology Center in Auburn Hills have been paired with those of its Lamborghini Engineering subsidiary in Modena, Italy, for the development of the engine. "We've made a lot of progress in the last two years utilizing our efficient platform team approach, which is the same philosophy that's been responsible for the successful launch of a number of new Chrysler products in the international marketplace," noted Castaing. "We believe these same principles are well suited for the new era that's about to begin in Formula One in 1994."
In working with McLaren International, one of the most successful Grand Prix racing organizations of all time, with 102 victories and 16 world championships, Chrysler will further challenge a group of its own engineers in the development of advanced powertrain technology that will be relevant in designing new passenger vehicle engines and transmissions for the future. These systems will soon need to be much lighter and more efficient while still providing spirited performance -- the same areas in which today's Formula One powertrain technology is immersed.
