McDONNELL DOUGLAS-BUILT DELTA II SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHES AIR FORCE NAVSTAR SATELLITE

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- A McDonnell Douglas-built Delta II expendable launch vehicle, carrying the 18th in a series of U.S. Air Force NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., at 9:55 p.m. EST this evening.
This launch marks the 40th consecutive successful flight of the Delta and the 20th mission completed under McDonnell Douglas' (NYSE: MD) current contract with the U.S. Air Force, signed in 1987. In addition to 18 GPS satellites the contract included the Roentgen (ROSAT) and Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) science missions, launched by the Air Force for NASA.
"The launch of GPS II-18 fulfills McDonnell Douglas' initial contract with the Air Force for production and launch of Delta II vehicles," said Larry Gale, McDonnell Douglas Air Force program manager. "However, we have a contract for 10 follow-on launches and will be launching GPS satellites well into 1995."
For the past 15 years and 84 launches, the Delta shows a success ratio of 98.8 percent.
A 7925 configuration of the Delta lofted the U.S. Air Force GPS spacecraft into geosynchronous transfer orbit. The GPS is a space- based radio navigation system that provides U.S. and allied land, sea and air forces with worldwide, three-dimensional position and velocity information.
