McDONNELL DOUGLAS WINS CONTRACT FOR DUTCH TANKER TRANSPORT PROGRAM

LONG BEACH, Calif., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) has received a $32 million cost-plus contract from the U.S. Air Force to begin modification of two DC-10 Series 30CF (convertible freighters) into KDC-10 tanker transport aircraft for the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
Under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, the Transport Aircraft unit of McDonnell Douglas Aerospace will complete a price proposal and definitization of the full contract which the company estimates at approximately $100 million over a two-and-one-half year period.
The $32 million contract, which covers the initial phase of the program, was awarded by USAF's Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center.
The program calls for design, modification and certification of two Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) DC-10-30CFs as KC-10 boom- type aerial refueling tankers. The contract will include all initial support requirements such as spares, support equipment and technical publications.
"This is an important contract for us," said Rodney M. Linford, vice president-general manager, Advanced Programs and Technology for McDonnell Douglas Transport Aircraft. "This could open up future opportunities for allied nations to convert other (DC-10) transports into aerial refueling tankers."
The DC-10-30CFs, built by McDonnell Douglas, were obtained by the RNLAF from Martinair, the Dutch charter airline. A new remote aerial refueling operator's system is being developed by McDonnell Douglas' Defense and Electronics Systems unit in Santa Ana, Calif., based on concepts validated by the technology group of the Transport Aircraft unit.
Most of the engineering for the aircraft modification will be accomplished at McDonnell Douglas' Long Beach facilities, Linford said, but the subcontractor for the actual modification work has yet to be selected.
