McDONNELL DOUGLAS TO SELL VISUAL SIMULATION SYSTEMS BUSINESS UNIT
MCLEAN, Va., Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas Corp. (NYSE: MD) announced today it intends to sell the Visual Simulation Systems (VSS) business unit of the McDonnell Douglas Electronic Systems Co. Preliminary discussions with prospective buyers will begin this week.
VSS is a leading producer of computer-generated image display systems used in aircraft simulators. The business unit designs, manufactures, installs and supports the systems. The systems are marketed under the trade name VITAL, principally to commercial customers.
"This decision is part of the actions we are taking to restructure, streamline and sharpen our business focus," said Kenneth A. Francis, executive vice president, McDonnell Douglas. "This move is consistent with our strategy to concentrate on our principal aerospace businesses, where we are -- or can become -- the number one or number two company worldwide. VSS has a broad customer base, and we believe a sale to the right party will further improve its growth opportunities."
VSS has been profitable on revenues exceeding $40 million annually. More than 90 percent of the sales have been to commercial customers. VSS employs about 150 people. Its administrative, engineering and manufacturing facilities are located in St. Charles, Mo.
McDonnell Douglas has produced visual simulation systems since 1969 and has installed more than 350 units worldwide. Its customers include about 90 commercial airlines and government customers in the United States and overseas.
