McDONNELL DOUGLAS TECHNOLOGIES TEAMS WIN AWARDS

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Quality improvement teams from McDonnell Douglas Technologies, a division of St. Louis-based McDonnell Douglas Aerospace, won two of the top honors in Team Excellence Showcase, a competition sponsored by the San Diego Institute for Quality and Productivity. Presented Nov. 30, the awards recognize outstanding local quality improvement teams.
U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-51st Dist., who attended the ceremony, praised McDonnell Douglas for its commitment to teamwork and quality improvement. He also awarded the company a commemorative plaque and decreed Nov. 30 to be McDonnell Douglas Technologies Foam Team Day in his district, where the McDonnell Douglas plant is located.
The McDonnell Douglas Technologies Foam Team was presented the sole first-place award in the Highest Achievement in Team Excellence category for process improvements in the production of enhanced high temperature resistant ceramic foam. The foam, which primarily is used in the hot structures of aerospace vehicles, has grown into a significant percentage of McDonnell Douglas Technologies' gross sales.
In less than six months, the team was able to mature the foam from limited quantity laboratory samples to a full-scale production process that greatly reduced scrap, improved fabrication time, and eliminated product rejection.
The McDonnell Douglas CHARTS (Chemical and Hazardous Materials Automated Reporting and Tracking System) team won one of two second- place awards in the Significant Progress in Team Excellence category. In only six months, the team developed an automated process to track and catalog usage and emissions of hazardous materials in accordance with Air Pollution Control District requirements.
By developing a bar code system and combining it with an existing relational database, the CHARTS team is able to inventory all chemicals or materials used by McDonnell Douglas Technologies, track them as they are dispensed for use, and alert the user to potential usage conflicts or hazards, as well as required protective equipment.
The Foam and Charts teams are among several chartered during the last year and were nominated for the competition because they showed the most significant gains.
