McDONNELL DOUGLAS SPACE SYSTEMS SIGNS LETTER CONTRACT
 WITH STRATEGIC DEFENSE INITIATIVE ORGANIZATION
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) has signed a $14.36 million letter contract with McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Co. to begin launch support services for the Mid-course Space Experiment (MSX) program.
The MSX spacecraft will be launched on a Delta II 7920-10 expendable launch vehicle in late 1993 or early 1994. This will be the first SDIO mission launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.
"Our Delta launch team at Vandenberg eagerly waited for this news," said Richard Murphy, McDonnell Douglas Space Systems' director of NASA, SDIO and commercial launches. "We've worked with SDI on four other missions, all successful, and look forward to being part of their program again."
MSX will investigate sensors and phenomenology related to sensing ballistic missile warheads during mid-course flight. Previous Delta SDIO launches from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., include Delta 180 in 1986, Delta 181 in 1988, Delta Star in 1989, and Delta 192 which carried the Low-Power Atmospheric Compensation Experiment (LACE) and the Relay Mirror Experiment (RME).
Over the past five years and 28 launches Delta rockets have maintained a 100 percent success rate.
