McDONNELL DOUGLAS RECEIVES $2 MILLION CONTRACT FOR ADVANCED DEPLOYABLE SYSTEMS STUDY

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) has been awarded a $2 million contract to perform system concept definition studies for the Advanced Deployable Systems (ADS) Program for the U.S. Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. AT&T, IBM and Lockheed also received contracts and, by the end of the 16-month studies, the field will be narrowed to one or two prime contracts for the production of fieldable system prototypes.
The ADS program addresses the availability of undersea surveillance systems that are capable of rapid deployment in shallow water and are small enough to be deployed from the air, surface ships and underwater vehicles.
"It's critical that the U.S. has the capability to quickly respond to regional crises," said Steve Watanabe, ADS program manager for McDonnell Douglas Aerospace. "Our concept, called ALADDIN, is derived from a decade of experience in undersea surveillance systems. This contract is a logical extension of that work."
Teamed with McDonnell Douglas is Hughes Aircraft Co. of Fullerton, Calif., Magnavox Electronic Systems Co. of Fort Wayne, Ind., Western Instrument Corp. of Ventura, Calif., and ORINCON Corp. and Applied Remote Technologies, both of San Diego.
