 McDONNELL DOUGLAS INTRODUCES RECONFIGURABLE COCKPIT
INTO THE U.S. AIR FORCE TRAINING INVENTORY
ST. LOUIS, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Flexible, affordable, mobile simulation has come of age with the introduction of McDonnell Douglas Training Systems' reconfigurable cockpit into the U.S. Air Force training inventory. Under development at McDonnell Douglas for more than four years, the reconfigurable cockpit provides a low-cost, portable training device with concurrent aircraft software.
In the first military application of the reconfigurable cockpit, the Air Force has ordered 18 F-15 weapons and tactics trainers (WTTs). Designed to sharpen and maintain pilot skills at the squadron level, the WTT offers the added bonus of easy deployment to virtually any site and rapid software changes to accommodate aircraft modifications even before they reach the operational unit.
The WTT -- operating on normal office power with no special cooling needs in a standard-size ready room -- complements high-fidelity domed training devices at a fraction of the cost. With sophisticated networking capabilities, WTTs and domed simulators can be linked together for multi-ship and composite wing training.
The WTT is equipped with F-15 avionics, air-to-air, radar, weapons and defense systems. Training scenarios range from basic cockpit switchology and procedures, to pilot proficiency, to complete tactical training and mission rehearsal. With up to 30 modifiable mission scenarios, the WTT presents pilots with 16 aggressors that can be modified to reflect actual war tactics and includes target and weapons modifications to focus on the various training aspects. With a built-in scoring system, the WTT can be used with or without an instructor at virtually any time of day -- an especially attractive feature, according to Air Force pilots who have been using the device.
The WTT is equipped with an F-15 throttle and stick, right and left panel control switchology, a 27-inch color display with touch-screen capabilities, a 19-inch color monitor heads-up/out-the-window display and a 19-inch auxiliary color display.
At approximately $500,000 per unit, the WTT offers an affordable companion trainer to its $30 million dome counterpart. The trainer also boasts an availability rate of 95-100 percent, running approximately 10 to 13 hours per day. The WTT requires no on-site logistic support.
McDonnell Douglas Training Systems was awarded the WTT contract in 1989 and delivered the first unit within 14 months. To date, 16 WTTs have been delivered to Air Force bases around the world.
The reconfigurable cockpit can simulate many aircraft variations with a simple change of software, stick and throttle grips and inexpensive side console panels. In addition to the F-15 WTT, the system has been demonstrated as an F/A-18, F-16, F/A-18E/F, T-45A and submarine station. Keys to the system's affordability and ease of operation are an embedded microcomputer processor, off-the-shelf computer graphics system and touch-sensitive main instrument panel.
