McDONNELL DOUGLAS DELIVERS 800TH APACHE TO U.S. ARMY

MESA, Ariz., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas Aerospace has delivered its 800th AH-64 Apache to the U.S. Army, marking a major milestone for the Army's number one attack helicopter program.
The 800th Apache is destined to become part of the 8-229th Combat Aviation Battalion, U.S. Army Reserves (Kentucky), which is home-based at Fort Knox, Ky. The U.S. Army has fielded 29 combat-ready Apache battalions since 1985.
"We've come a long way since the first Apaches were delivered nearly a decade ago," said Dean Borgman, president of McDonnell Douglas' helicopter operations. "The latest aircraft to come off the assembly line are more reliable, easier to maintain and clearly reflect the effort of thousands of dedicated teammates who have contributed to this vital Army program for many years.
"We're providing the Army with a product that has maintained a distinct advantage for our troops, and we're working to ensure that they retain that advantage in years to come," Borgman added.
The 800th Apache was one of five Apaches delivered to the U.S. Army on schedule in August.
In addition to the 811 AH-64s McDonnell Douglas will produce for the U.S. Army, international customers are purchasing 94 Apaches through foreign military sales contracts, and several other nations around the world have expressed interest in the combat-proven multimission helicopter. Efforts also are continuing to secure additional domestic sales. McDonnell Douglas estimates a worldwide market for 500 international Apaches.
With orders and commitments for 905 Apaches, production at the company's Mesa facility will continue uninterrupted into mid-1995.
Additionally, the U.S. Army plans to remanufacture its fleet of AH-64As into modernized AH-64C Apaches and AH-64D Longbow Apaches beginning in 1996.
Three of four AH-64D Longbow Apache prototypes are flying and a fourth is scheduled to fly next month. The first of two AH-64C Apache prototypes is scheduled to fly early next year.
