McDONNELL DOUGLAS DELIVERS 500TH MD 500E HELICOPTER
MESA, Ariz., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas and the

Riverside County, Calif., Sheriff's Department marked major milestones today with the delivery of the company's 500th MD 500E turbine helicopter.
The new law enforcement helicopter is the first rotorcraft for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, which has established an aero bureau to aid in crime prevention throughout the 7,300-square-mile county.
Dean Borgman, president of McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co., presented the keys to Sheriff Cois Byrd and Deputy Chief Larry Smith in a ceremony at the McDonnell Douglas Helicopter facility here.
The MD 500E will be used for patrol, combating narcotics traffickers, search and rescue, and personnel deployment throughout the county that is home to more than 1.3 million residents. The MD 500E also will be available to support other agencies, when requested.
Plans are already in the works for a second helicopter to expand the department's aerial support program.
Leo Bell, the department's chief pilot, said MD 500E is expected to enter service in the next few weeks after a searchlight, forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor and other systems are installed and when training for pilots and support crews is complete.
The MD 500E is a member of the MD 500 Series of helicopters produced by McDonnell Douglas in a wide range of civil and military models. More than 4,500 MD 500 Series helicopters have been delivered to customers since the first member of the family, the OH-6A, went into production in the mid-1960s. The first MD 500E was delivered in 1982.
The five-place turbine MD 500E continues to be well accepted for law enforcement duties with some 60 agencies worldwide now operating MD 500 Series helicopters.
MD 500 Series helicopters are among the fastest and quietest helicopters in production, and are well known for their agility and overall performance characteristics, according to Bart Kent, McDonnell Douglas Helicopter's manager of business development for the Americas.
Helicopters within the series hold a number of distance, speed and time-to-climb records. These include the world's longest non-stop flight for a helicopter of any size of 2,213.04 miles from Culver City, Calif., to Ormond Beach, Fla., set in April 1966.
