McDONNELL DOUGLAS AWARDED CONTRACT TO PRODUCE
LASER DESIGNATOR RANGEFINDER FOR ARMY'S COMANCHE HELICOPTER
McLEAN, Va., July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) announced today it has been awarded a contract to produce a Laser Designator Rangefinder (LDRF) for the U.S. Army's Comanche light helicopter program.
Under the terms of the research and development subcontract to Martin Marietta (NYSE: ML), McDonnell Douglas will build three prototype LRF/Ds. Martin Marietta is the prime contractor for Comanche's electro-optic sensor system (EOSS).
The McDonnell Douglas LDRF is a dual-mode, solid-state, high energy laser. The system will be lightweight due to the use of hot diodes and a composite housing. Hot diodes can operate at 85 degrees, thereby eliminating the need for thermoelectric coolers.
As part of the EOSS, the LDRF will be housed on the nose of the helicopter, providing passive laser target designating and range finding under all weather conditions.
The McDonnell Douglas Electronic Systems Co., a division of McDonnell Douglas, will design and manufacture the LDRF at its St. Louis-based laser and electronics facility.
