McDONNELL DOUGLAS AEROSPACE AWARDED FOLLOW-ON CONTRACT

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas Aerospace has been awarded a follow-on contract to continue design studies of the Solar Electric Orbital Transfer Vehicle (SEOTV), bringing the total contract value to $697,000.
Under the contract awarded by the U.S. Air Force, McDonnell Douglas will continue design, requirements definition, and technology development activities of SEOTVs for medium launch vehicle application.
SEOTV is an alternative upper-stage concept that uses electric thrusters to transfer payloads into final orbit. By significantly reducing the amount of required fuel to perform the orbit transfer mission, the SEOTV reduces costs and enables the use of smaller launch vehicles to transfer satellites that currently require larger, more expensive boosters.
McDonnell Douglas is exploring the relative benefits of using expendable, integral and reusable SEOTVs. The upper stage is scheduled for initial operation capability at the turn of the century.
