McDONNELL DOUGLAS,M?ARTIN MARIETTA ANNOUNCE THIOKOL SELECTED FOR
FURTHER NEGOTIATIONS TO JOIN SPACE SYSTEMS CO. TEAM
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Co., Huntington Beach, and Martin Marietta Electronics, Information & Missiles Group of Orlando, Fla., announced Thiokol Corp., Huntsville Division, Huntsville, Ala., has been selected for further negotiations to join the Space Systems Co. team which will be competing for the U.S. Army Strategic Defense Command's Theater High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) contract.
The THAAD program is expected to result in a high altitude interceptor with the capability of protecting a large area against chemical, biological, and nuclear tactical ballistic missiles. As a subcontractor to Martin Marietta, Thiokol would design, develop and manufacture the boosters for the THAAD program. Boosters would be delivered to Martin Marietta for final missile integration.
"The addition of Thiokol will make our proposal that much stronger," said Hank Todd, McDonnell Douglas Space System Co.'s program manager for THAAD. "Combine our 30 years of experience in ballistic missile defense with that of our partners and you've got a proven team that can field the THAAD system by 1996."
Other teammates include Raytheon Co., Missiles Systems Division, Bedford, Mass.; Aerojet TechSystems, Sacramento, Calif.; Bodenseewerk Geratetechnik GmbH, Germany; Harris Corp., Government Aerospace Systems Division, Melbourne, Fla.; and Rockwell International Corp., Autonetics Sensors and Aircraft Systems Division, Anaheim, Calif.
