McConnell: I know Jack about dinner.

JACK McConnell yesterday told a court a dinner for which a charity fundraiser claimed expenses never took place.

The former first minister gave evidence in the trial of Elaine McGonigle.

The 50-year-old from Errol, Perthshire, denies 13 charges of making false claims for expenses totalling PS1855 while she was director of the New Pyjamas Campaign - including a PS70.40 claim for a meeting with Lord McConnell on April 4, 2009.

The 53-year-old politician organised the launch of the campaign to raise PS15million to build a new Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

But he told the city's sheriff court: "From memory, I have no recollection of having dinner with Elaine McGonigle."

He said the date was "definitely not in my diary" and his staff also had no recollection of it.

The trial continues.
