McCain Foods Officially Opens New Carleton Plant on P.E.I.

CARLETON, P.E.I. - The new $36 million McCain Foods potato processing plant on Prince Edward Island was officially opened by Premier Joseph Ghiz on September 11. McCain Foods Chairman Harrison McCain and President Wallace McCain joined the premier in the ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

Other McCain platform guests included Senior Vice President Archie McLean, Vice President of Operations Bill Adams, Plant Manager Mike Ryder and Agricultural Manager Ivan Noonan. The government was also represented by Industry Minister Robert Morrissey.

The ribbon-cutting ceremonies were only one part of a full afternoon's activities for the more than 500 invited guests who attended the opening.

Prince Edward Island fiddlers provided music and guests sampled a wide range of McCain products and other hors d'oeuvres served throughout the celebration. Groups of guests toured the plant facilities while McCain employees acted as guides, hosts and hostesses.

Guests began arriving for the afternoon event at 2:30 p.m. and included federal, provincial and local government officials, potato growers, construction contractors, representatives of Island potato grower associations, members of the media and McCain personnel.

Tours of the state-of-the-art potato specialities processing facility were conducted while the highly automated plant was in full operation to give Island residents a better idea of the facilities.

The 103,585 square foot plant was announced by McCain Foods in February 1990. Construction began in May of the same year and commercial processing was under way by February 1991.

The plant has a present employment of 107, including part time and temporary personnel, and is operating at 50 to 60% of capacity.

Products produced by the plant include McCain SuperSpirals, McCain SuperCrisps, McCain SuperCrisps Wedges, and other specialty products are under development.
