Maynard's upset after Cov collapse.

Byline: John Wilkinson

RUGBY director Phil Maynard declared Coventry's performance 'unacceptable' after his side crashed to a 31-10 National League One defeat in the wet at Wharfedale.

Cov opened up a 10-0 lead in the opening quarter but rarely threatened over the remaining hour and conceded four tries to return home empty-handed.

"To go ten points up and then lose the rest of the game 31-0 is unacceptable," said Maynard. "It was very poor.

"They taught us a lesson in ball retention and we tended to kick away good possession and attempt to run poor possession. It all came off the rails when we tried to chase the game.

"We were disrupted by a few knocks and their first try came from a charge-down, it was seven soft points and a turning point in the game "But there were a lot of other parts of the game where we fell down and I have to say that they wanted it more than we did - that's what hurts the most.

"It's deeply disappointing for everyone concerned and we have to take a long, hard look at ourselves next week and put in the work to get it right for when Stourbridge come to us on Saturday."
