Maxwell Laboratories subsidiary receives favorable FDA action on food treatment process.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 1995--Maxwell Laboratories (NMS:MXWL) Thursday announced that its PurePulse Technologies Inc. subsidiary has been advised by the Food and Drug Administration that, based on the extensive scientific evidence submitted, the company's CoolPure reduced-temperature pasteurization process can be used broadly to treat foods and beverages without further regulatory action.

The CoolPure process uses pulsed electrical energy to pasteurize pumpable products such as juices, beverages, milk and liquid eggs at relatively low temperatures. Because the process can be applied at lower temperatures than those used for conventional pasteurization, no appreciable thermal damage occurs, and the original fresh taste, natural color, texture and functionalities of foods can be retained.

For example, orange juice processed with CoolPure tastes fresh- squeezed. The CoolPure process can also provide substantial product safety and shelf life benefits for many products.

Wayne Clark, president of PurePulse Technologies, said: ``We are very pleased with the FDA action and are confident that the CoolPure process will contribute significant quality improvement benefits for a number of existing and new commercial food products. We expect to deliver our first beta-site commercial test system within the next two months.''

Maxwell Laboratories, based in San Diego, is an advanced scientific and computer-based information systems and services company and a leading developer and manufacturer of high-energy, pulsed-power components and systems for defense and commercial markets such as food processing and packaging, mining, health care and transportation.

The company also designs and manufactures integrated PC systems for real-time commercial and industrial applications.

Maxwell's PurePulse Technologies subsidiary is developing and commercializing advanced systems for sterilizing and pasteurizing foods, packaging, medical/pharmaceutical products, water and air.
