Matthew Wright column: Jam today for Zender.

DID he jump or was he pushed? Whatever the reason for Stuart Zender's sudden departure from Jamiroquai, it seems he's fallen on his feet.

I'm told the bass player has just signed a pounds 500,000 worldwide deal with Cheeba Sound, a subsidiary of Virgin records. Stuart, 26, will be able to release his own songs and establish himself as a star in his own right.

An insider says: "He's formed a band and they plan to go into the studio later in the year to start work on their first album."

Zender says he quit to spend more time with his All Saints girlfriend Melanie Blatt and their child Lily. But it seems his old band mate Jay Kay still feels he walked out on them.

Talking in the new edition of Ministry magazine, he says: "We lost our bass player from the line up at the 11th hour, as it were, just when we were ready to bring the fourth album out."
