This is one of the latest in a collection of over thirty volumes featuring important modem and contemporary artists. The author, like the others of this series, is a knowledgeable art historian and skillful writer. The biography and artistic development of Matisse is concentrated in the first thirty-two pages, turning the remainder of the book into a colorful ode to the inventive mind of one of history's most significant artists. From Fauvism through lyrical abstraction, through drawings, prints, paintings and papiers decoupes, 217 illustrations reinforce the status of Matisse. A worthwhile addition to a school or personal library. A listing of other artists represented in this series may be obtained by contacting Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., 300 Park Ave. So., New York, NY 10010.

Another series about artists from the same publisher is the Rizzoli Art Series. This low-cost ($7.95 each) set of six paperbacks is an excellent opportunity to acquire mid-size reproductions of artwork in a book format. Each volume presents sixteen full-color prints and several black-and-white illustrations. An accompanying text introducing the artist's work, establishes how the artist is seen from the perspective of today's new approaches to art and culture. Artists represented in this excellent series include: Edward Hopper, Jasper Johns, Jacob Lawrence, Kazimir Malevich, Rembrandt, Georges Seurat, Piero della Francesca and Mary Cassatt.
