Massive police operation in Larnaca.

POLICE conducted a wide-scale operation starting on Friday and ending yesterday in Larnaca to combat gambling, noise pollution and copyright infringement.

According to police spokesman Andreas Angelides, during the early hours of yesterday police raided a premises that was set up as a casino. They arrested 16 people and charged them in writing in connection with gathering in order to gamble illegally. They were later released. Police seized from the premises 16 tables, four roulette machines, a large number of cards, $3,605 (e1/42,852), ?80 sterling (e1/499), 5,200 Israeli Shekel (e1/41,068), a cheque for e1/4100 and e1/46,000 in cash.

Angelides said they had been hidden in places within the walls, and were "evidence that supports the offence of gambling".

A 68-year-old man was arrested during the raid in connection with copyright infringement after police found and seized 1,083 DVDS containing musicals and 319 DVDS of various movies, that appeared to be copies. They also seized
