Massey Energy Reports Surface Mine Accident.

Massey Energy Company reported an accident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. today at its Progress resource group Twilight surface mine. Billy Birchfield, 37, and Rodney Sheets, 47, were fatally injured in the accident involving a rock truck and a van transporting workers to the surface mine work area. A third worker traveling in the van was also injured and taken to a Charleston, West Virginia area hospital.

The Company and regulatory authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. No further details are currently available.

The Company is deeply saddened by the loss of these members of the Massey organization and extends sympathy and support to each member's family and co- workers. The Company wishes the injured worker a complete and rapid recovery.
