Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry: Techniques and Applications of Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry: Techniques and Applications of Tandem Mass Spectrometry. By K.L. Busch, G.L. Glish, and S.A. McLuckey

This book is a worthy successor to Fred McLaffety's Tandem Mass Spectrometry, now six years old. The authors have produced a readable book that clearly summarizes the theory, practice and applications of mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry.

There is an extensive discussion of the possible instrumentation configurations including sector, quadrupole, filter ion trap and FT-ICR instrumentation and hybrid systems. All possible configurations are considered with emphasis on those which have been built in practice. The resolution or lack thereof of the various instruments and methods are made clear.

Chapter 3 covers reactions in MS/MS and is followed by a chapter on applications to fundamental studies in ion chemistry, topics including unimolecular and bimolecular reactions, various reaction regions, and the thermochemistry of ions.

A short chapter introduces the experimental techniques involved in using MS/MS for analytical applications followed by a lengthy discussion (100 + pages) of specific applications to both a wide variety of compound types and to various industries that make use of the technique. There is something for nearly all users of mass spectrometry in this chapter.

In their concluding chapter the authors gaze into their crystal ball and predict the appearance of dedicated, lower cost MS/MS instruments in the not-to-distant future. If they are correct, then their book should have a place in every lab considering such equipment. I recommend it most highly.
