Mason chisels off his rough edges.

Byline: BOXING By Matt Bozeat

LEAMINGTON lightheavyweight John Mason plans to box clever on his professional debut.

Mason boxes on manager Errol Johnson's show at The Venue in Dudley on Friday night - and the 29-year-old says his preparations have been perfect.

As an amateur with Racing Club Warwick, Mason was a fans' favourite who didn't mind taking a punch to land one of his own.

But he says coaches Johnson and Bob Plant have smoothed his rough edges in the countdown to his paid debut against Dan Phelps.

Phelps comes from Trowbridge to fight - and Mason has his game plan worked out.

"I used to get sloppy when I was an amateur," he said, "but my coaches have tidied me up.

"They told me I have to stick to my boxing on Friday night and that's what I plan to do.

"I've had good sparring and my fitness has gone off the scale ! I've never felt better."

Tickets for the show are available from 07854 094892.
