Masked man filmed firing five shots over coffin of former teacher sparking police probe; Former teacher and veteran Republican, Seamus O'Kane, was laid to rest a Derry City Cemetery on Friday.

Footage showing a masked man firing five shots over the coffin of a former teacher is being investigated by police.

Seamus O'Kane, who was also a veteran republican socialist inNorthern Ireland, was laid to rest at Derry's City Cemetery on Friday.

The ex-St Peter's High School teacher, who passed away on January 2, is reported to have been a former member of the Official IRA.

According to theDerry Journal, he was arrested for questioning over a car bomb which killed seven people outside Aldershot Barracks three weeks after Bloody Sunday in 1972 but released without charge.

The video shows three masked men standing in front of a Starry Plough adorned coffin at Glenowen Park, before one let off the volley of shots, reportsBelfast Live.

The 70-year-old was heavily involved in politics and the civil rights movement and joined the young socialists in the 1960s.

O'Kane returned to education in later years, and taught at St Peter's in Creggan until his retirement, according toBelfast Live.

Long time friend Tommy McCourt, said Mr O'Kane would be 'sadly missed'

He told Derry Now: "He was involved in social politics from the early civil rights days right through until very recently. He will be very badly missed as regards his contributions."

A spokesperson for thePSNIsaid they will be probing the incident.

"Police in Derry/Londonderry are aware of a report of shots being fired in the Glenowen area on Wednesday 3rd January, and are investigating," they said.
