Mary Salerno, former head of AREW has died.

Mary Salerno, a former president of the Association of Real Estate Women, and senior manager with major New York realty firms for three decades, died of cancer July 14 at Lenox Hill Hospital. She had been cited as one of ten subjects featured in David King's book, "The Best Way In The World to Make Money."

A director of Sylvan Lawrence since 1991, her special focus was commercial office buildings in the midtown area. She began in real estate in 1976, after attracting some attention as a labor negotiator on the City's waterfront when New York's port was a major player in world shipping. Joining Berley & Company, for the next eight years she served as manager and rental agent for over 150 midtown buildings. She was named director of office leasing and then vice president. When the company was sold in 1984, she moved over to Sutton & Edwards a as senior vice president. In 1991 she allied herself with Sylvan Lawrence Company, continuing her interest in midtown office buildings.

Salerno was elected president of the AREW in 1985. For her role in furthering the growth of that organization for women in real estate, she was awarded its first Founder's Award in 1994.

Her other professional associations included membership in the Real Estate Board of New York, The Turtle Bay Association and the Beekman East Condominium, of which she was president. Salerno had long been affiliated with the Volunteer Services for Children, serving as a fundraiser for the organization, which provided remedial reading instruction, plus Saturday outing programs for disadvantaged children in the Greater New York area.

Salerno graduated magna cum laude from Fordham University in psychology, gaining membership in psychology honor societies, as well as Alpha Sigma Lambda, the national honor society. Born and raised in New York City, she lived most of her adult years in Turtle Bay.

She is survived by her sister, Tina Smith and a brother, Fried Palmieri, who are twins, and 11 nieces and nephews.
