Marvels and mystery in National Museum.

Peden's Mask A terrifying mask and wig of the Covenanting minister Alexander Peden (1626-1686).

He was one of the leaders of the Covenant movement, which supported the democracy of the Presbyterian church.

He wore the mask and wig -made of leather and real human hair - at a time when he and fellow Covenanters lived in constant danger of arrest, a period known as The Killing Times.

Ballachulish Idol Image of a female carved from oak with quartz pebbles for eyes. The figure, found in 1880 at Ballachulish Moss, is probably a representation of a goddess but who she was, or what she represented, is unknown.

The peat bog where she was found was probably a sacred place.

A witch's cursing bone Made of a deer or sheep's bone stuck into a piece of bog oak, the bone is said to have belonged to witches in Glen Shira, Inveraray, Argyll.

Thebloodofanewlykilled hen was poured through the bone as the curse was spoken.

A calf's heart stuck with pins This was found in the wall of a cattle byre.

The heart may date back to the 1700s when farmers put counter charms near livestock to stop witches casting curses on the animals.

The charm was gifted to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland by Sir Walter Scott.

The Glenorchy Charmstone This belonged to the Campbell family of Glenorchy and Bredalbane, Argyll.

Used for curing sickness in cattle, this charm is probably the one recorded in the Black Book of Taymouth of 1640.

It is made of rock crystal set in a mount of silver and red coral.
