Martin's among a select few.

Byline: By Alan Hedley

Denis Martin joined a select band when he won the Northumberland County Seniors Championship at Westerhope.

The Newbiggin golfer became only the third player to win both the County Championship and the County Seniors title ( he won the county's premier event in 1986.

Shooting a three-under-par 69 at Westerhope to win by five shots saw Martin join Bobby Rutherford and David Moffat as a double county champion.

It was the first time Martin has entered the seniors and, remarkably, it was his first game of golf for 10 weeks because of tendonitis of the wrist.

"I tried to play three weeks ago in the English Seniors and had to pull out of the practice round because it flared up again," he said. "I was just looking to get round the golf course and if you offered me a 75 at the start of the day I would have taken it."

Martin did better than that with birdies at two of the toughest holes on the course, the 11th and 16th, on his way to victory.

Scores: 69 D Martin (Newbiggin); 74 R Farrelly (Westerhope), D George (Ponteland), G Sales (Backworth); 75 D Miller (Ponteland).
